In its determination to address quackery practice within the building industry and encourage the patronage of competent, standard and accredited independent Materials Testing Laboratories, the Lagos State Government has issued letters of registration to some independent laboratories.
The registered independent laboratories are to join Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) in examining Building and Civil Engineering (Construction) Materials for quality assurance as mandated by Volume 3 Cap B4 Laws of the Lagos State 2015.
Speaking at the presentation of the licenses to the newly registered operators – Anwa Technical Ventures Limited, Masodak Associates and RFI Integrated Services – the General Manager of Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Olalekan Ajani, disclosed that the intention of the State government is to have a wider coverage of building materials testing across Lagos.
He informed operators that the building and civil engineering(Construction) materials law cap B4, laws of Lagos State 2015, empowers the agency to register all independent materials Testing Laboratories, building and civil engineering materials producers and manufacturers as well as monitor performance to ensure compliance with designated standard specifications.
According to him, “Apart from conducting tests on building and civil engineering (Construction) materials, the agency also has the mandate to register qualified independent laboratories in different categories in the State”.
Ajani, therefore, enjoined all stakeholders in the building industry in Lagos State to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the agency and register their Laboratories, stressing that anyone caught operating illegally would be severely dealt with in accordance to promulgated laws.
“It is pertinent to call on any person or company (private or public) that has the intention of operating a laboratory within Lagos State, to register with Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory”, he stated.
