THE Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Kano State Chapter, on Monday disclosed its plans to sensitise secondary school girls on the need for them to study engineering.
The association’s chairperson, Zainab Yunusa made the disclosure at the launch of the association’s third edition magazine, ‘Kano Female Engineers’ in Kano..
Yunusa,who said that the association had been encouraging the girl-child education, added that it was prepared to introduce young girls to the basics of engineering study and practice.
“The association had been able to reach out to local and international community, besides organising career talks and lectures on the need for girls to shun drug abuse and other social vices,” she said.
Yunusa said that the association was set up in 2005, with the main objective of encouraging the girl-child to study engineering.
She said that the association had been creating awareness through public lectures, workshops, industrial and benevolence visits among others.
Mr. Ali Rabi’u, the President of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) said that it was imperative for the girls to take science subjects seriously.
Rabi’u,who commended the association on its efforts at promoting girl-child education in the state, also enjioned it to sustain the tempo.
NAN reports that the event was attended by prominent personalities including past Executive members of the association and APWEN President, Felicia Agubata.
Highlights of the occasion include presentation of merit awards to former executive members of the association in recognition of their contributions to the growth and development of the association.
