A floor safety expert, Mr. Tomasz Wolski has said that floor safety should be of paramount importance to facility managers, property owners and every Nigerian.
He made this known during a three-day training programme organized by No-slips Limited, the Nigerian representative and service providin Nigeria.
The training programme took place last weekend in Lagos.
Tomasz, a citizen of Poland is a certified global Surestep trainer and safety professional. He stated that the importance of floor treatment cannot be overemphasized as slip and fall accidents are a common occurrence at work places, event centers, homes and other high traffic facilities adding that, the effect of a slip and fall accident can be fatal.
“Floor safety is important because we walk on floors every day. Safety and health are the two most important aspects of human wellbeing so why won’t we care about it. Very often people forget about floor safety but I think that our floors should never be unsafe.”
Also speaking during the training exercise, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of No-Slips Limited, Mr. Charles Igbinidu said, people don’t take floor safety serious because much attention is not drawn to slip and fall accidents in Nigeria.
“People need to start taking floor safety very seriously. All over the world, people are constantly experiencing slip and fall accidents and every one of us can testify to that because, at some point in our lives we have experienced it. Many people sustain permanent injuries and sometimes victims may die.
“It’s unfortunate that people don’t like to talk about it and there is no accurate record of how many times people slip and fall but, the statistics available to us shows that the rate of slip and fall accidents in Nigeria is alarming. People fall and get injured daily at homes, offices and other public places”
He also emphasized the need for facility managers and property owners to take responsibility for the safety of their guests stressing that the safety of their clients should be of utmost importance to them.
“It is very important for facility managers of commercial buildings and other property owners to be aware of the dangers of untreated floors and make their floors safer for their guests. It is their duty to provide their guests or customers with a safe and friendly environment.”
“As a matter of fact, everyone that walks on any kind of floor should be conscious of slip and fall accidents and do everything possible to prevent them from happening.
In the words of Tomasz, “Usually Facility managers start thinking about making their floor safe after there has been an accident. But it should not be so. That is why I like speaking with them whenever I have the opportunity because the effect of a fatal slip and fall accident happening on their property under their watch outweighs whatever it will cost them to put measures in place to prevent it in the first place. If a slip and fall accident happens in their pool for instance, they will lose customers and money. So, it is important for them to be able to give their customers the confidence that their facility is safe and would not be injurious to them through proactive safety measures, securing their businesses in the process.
