The Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba commissioning the equipment while the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Onuegbu Ugwu and the domor, Ngozi Eli-Chukwu and others watch with keen interest
The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, yesterday, commissioned some engineering equipment, made up of five work benches, donated by the Head, Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mrs. Ngozi Eli-Chukwu.
Speaking on the rationale for her donation, Eli-Chukwu decried the situation where engineering students were taught without exposing them to practical due to non availability of equipment.
“I discovered a bizarre situation that students could not do their practical due to non-availability of equipment”, she stated.
She also noted that the donation was borne out of the need to equip engineering students with the practical skills to excel in their respective disciplines on graduation, stressing that her father’s philanthropic nature also nurtured her to always see the need to give back to society.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, in support of the good gesture from Eli-Chukwu also made a donation of 5 engineering work benches worth N250, 000 to the Faculty, urging other members of the university community to join hands in building the institution. In the same vein, the Registrar, Mrs. Odisa Okeke made a pledge of one work bench, all geared towards repositioning the Faculty of Engineering and Technology to make it practical-oriented.
Expressing his happiness on the donations, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the present generation of staff was called to build the university, urging members of staff to make contributions, no matter how small, towards the growth and development of the institution.
“Whatever sacrifice or contribution you can make towards the development of the university, please do it. It will not be forgotten”, he stated.
He maintained that people give not necessarily because they have enough but because they have allowed God to use them to improve society.
Cautioning some staff who were in the habit of condemning and opposing some signature policies of the university, the Vice-Chancellor advised them to have a rethink, noting that he was not deterred by their antics as genuine leadership was not a popularity contest.
The Vice-Chancellor further reiterated his resolve to ensure that academic decorum was maintained in the university, stressing that sexual harassment, ‘sorting’, award of frivolous marks, sale of hand-outs and unapproved books, inappropriate examination questions and marking schemes by lecturers would not be condoned under his watch, admonishing those that indulge in such acts to either shape in or ship out.
