Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the appointment of Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola as the new General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).
Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, a young environmentalist and entrepreneur, was educated at Fisk University USA, Vanderbilt University and the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
Adebiyi-Abiola is coming into the saddle with a remarkable private sector experience and a passion for the environment, particularly in the waste recycling sector where she co-founded “WeCyclers”, a waste recycling company in consonance with the waste to wealth initiative of the State Government. The new General Manager has since assumed duty.
LASG urges citizens to embrace changes in environmental law
The Lagos State Government has implored citizens to be supportive of the recent environmental initiatives and laws being implemented.
The plea was made by the Special Adviser, Office of Civic Engagement, Hon. Kehinde Joseph at a One-Day Enlightenment Programme on Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law held at Yaba Local Government on Thursday.
In his address at the the event, Hon. Kehinde said that the sensitization programme was organised in line with the policy of the present administration’s resolve to ensure that Lagos is not only clean and beautiful but that citizens understand and key into its new Environmental Protection and Management Law and Cleaner Lagos Initiative.
Hon. Joseph disclosed that the holistic approach for a healthier Lagos will give room for private investors’ participation in solid waste management and encourage the adoption of best practices in the management of the environment especially in the deployment of equipment for solid waste collection and disposal.
He also implored Lagosians to embrace the new law and contribute their quota as the Ambode-led administration believes that this new approach would also create business and job opportunities for the rising population in the State.
The Special Adviser, therefore, advised residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on Lagos roads, drainages and canals in order to avoid sanctions from law enforcement personnel.
Also speaking at the forum, Director for Legal Matters in LAWMA, Mrs. Yinka Adeyemi reiterated the essential role of sensitization in environmental programmes, stressing that, Lagos State must sustain its position as the fifth on the list of world’s fastest-growing economies by ensuring that the environment is conducive for foreign and local investors.
Adeyemi urged business owners, marketers and right thinking members of the State to support the changes in the environmental law by encouraging and cooperating with the State agencies in charge to engender a cleaner and healthier environment.
Also present, was the Chairman, Yaba Local Development Area, Hon. Kayode Oluwole who appreciated the State government for putting together a programme aimed at informing and sensitizing the people on the need for a safer environment.
The highlights of the awareness programme included the lecture on the roles of Cleaner Lagos Initiative and LAWMA in the scheme; how to ensure effective waste management; the plans of the Lagos State Government on Recycling and the new law backing the initiative.
