The Makoko community, a neighbourhood on the coast of Lagos Mainland, popularly characterised as a slum, with a dense population, faces one of the greatest environmental problems – sewage and solid waste.
A waste and recycling social venture, Recycle Points, organised a one-day activity to touch on the issues of poor sanitation in the area and encourage residents to keep their community clean.
During the one-day clean-up, powered by Unilever, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions joined forces with Recycle Points, and other socially responsible organisations, in a bid to promote environmental sustainability. The exercise involved, clearing up of several tons of waste, debris, and recyclables from different spots within the community. This was done to reiterate Visionscape’s Sustainable Development Goals in tackling environmental issues, such as clean water and sanitation, which the community currently faces.
“Community clean-up means more than beautification of the environment to us. It is also about empowering and enlightening the residents of the community to build positive perception about themselves and their environment. We are committed to bettering the environment for the cities and communities in which we operate,” said Maimuna Maibe, Head Environmental Products and CSR of Visionscape Group.
She added that “the excitement of residents who participated in the exercise underscored the need for further enlightenment on waste management, and the provision of equipment necessary for proper waste management, which are all part our operations.
“At Visionscape, we are working tirelessly to promote environmental literacy, and through our CSR initiatives, such as Earn for the Earth and the Visionscape Environmental Education Progamme, we are helping communities living in such deplorable conditions to work towards a better future.”
